Integration checklist for upgrading a multi-saw infeed

Table of Contents

Automation projects move faster when the integration scope is clear. Here is the checklist we use when preparing a multi-saw infeed for the xception.io positioning module.

Mechanical

  • Confirm conveyor lengths, clearances, and rigidity for actuator mounting.
  • Verify guarding and safety envelopes for the new motion range.
  • Inspect board guides and kickers for play that could reduce positioning accuracy.

Electrical and controls

  • Identify available I/O, network ports, and PLC program access.
  • Map interlocks and emergency stop circuits affected by the new equipment.
  • Decide where optimization data is consumed: HMI, PLC, or both.

Production readiness

  • Capture baseline throughput, yield, and scrap for comparison.
  • Schedule installation during planned maintenance to avoid production loss.
  • Train operators on advisory vs integrated modes before go-live.

With these items locked in, installation and commissioning stay predictable, and the mill sees the yield uplift without extended downtime.

When adding automated positioning ahead of a multi-saw, mills often ask whether to stop at advisory mode or connect fully into the controls. Both options deliver yield gains, but they differ in scope, risk, and payback.
